Meet Edith
Possessing “a voluminous instrument of eloquence and force” (SF Gate), American mezzo-soprano Edith Grossman is a versatile performer with a foot firmly planted in both opera and musical theatre. A graduate of the Crane School of Music in New York and the Istituto Europeo in Florence, Italy, Edith is also a double-graduate of the prestigious Merola Opera Program in San Francisco and recently made her Carnegie Hall debut singing Mozart’s Regina Coeli.
Praised for the “versatility of her voice, her musicality, and her gift for communicating lyrics” (Utah Arts Review), Edith has established a firm reputation as an interpreter of new works, including creating roles in the world premieres of If I Were You (Heggie), In A Mirror, Darkly (Weiss) and Love Sick: A Rock Opera (Shreve), as well as workshopping Ricky Ian Gordon and Lynn Nottage’s Intimate Apparel with Lincoln Center Theater.
Her “vivid portrayal” (Opera Today) of Rachel in Jake Heggie and Gene Sheer’s If I Were You led to an engagement as a Resident Artist at Utah Opera, where she made her company debut in Poulenc’s difficult one-woman opera La Voix Humaine. Edith has subsequently performed for the company in La Tragedie de Carmen, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Jonathan Dove’s Flight, and Handel’s Messiah, garnering praise for her “flawless execution of vocal ornaments” and “flawless technique” (Utah Arts).
Alongside operatic roles in Falstaff, La Cenerentola, Le nozze di Figaro, Suor Angelica, La belle Hélène and Thomas’ Mignon, Edith has performed leading musical theater roles including Eliza Doolittle (My Fair Lady), Julie Jordan (Carousel), Grizabella (Cats) and Claire (Ordinary Days).
Singing regularly on the competition circuit in the United States and Europe, Edith has recently placed in competitions including the prestigious Jensen Foundation Vocal Competition, Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition, London Classical Music Competition, Partners for the Arts National Opera Competition, the Mildred Miller International Vocal Competition, and the Stars of the Albion Grand Prix (for which she was also awarded Best Vocal Performance).
Future engagements include: Charlotte in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Bradamante in Alcina, Jolanthe in Der Wald, and Frau Reich in Die Lustigen Weiber von Windsor with Oper Wuppertal.
